Montessori Model United Nations

Last school year, MPA was thrilled to have a delegation involved in the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) program who attended the conference in New York City last spring.

The program is taking a hiatus this school year and is looking forward to being offered again to students in the 2025-2026 school year. We are excited to expand the opportunity to include 5th – 8th grade students.

The Colorado Read Act & READ Plans

The Colorado Reading to Ensure Academic Development (READ) Act was passed by the Colorado Legislature during the 2012 session. The READ Act repealed the Colorado Basic Literacy Act (CBLA), with a focus on kindergarten through third-grade reading development, as well as students significantly below grade level in reading. The law was revised in 2019.

MPA and the READ Act

MPA fully supports READ Plans for students who are struggling with reading.  MPA uses DIBELS 8 to assess students three times per year for reading skills in accordance with CDE requirements along with classroom observations, formative assessments, and other tools to track student learning.

MPA currently has one full-time reading interventionist and one part-time assistant reading interventionist.  You can learn more about our team at our Academic Support webpage.

Students on a READ Plan receive targeted small group and 1:1 instruction both from our talented interventionists and in the classroom in addition to their daily Montessori literacy content.  Our interventionists and classroom teachers are certified or working to become certified in the Yoshimoto Orton-Gillingham (OGI) method of teaching literacy.  Students may also engage in Lexia Core 5, IXL, Read Naturally, Heggerty, and other supports as part of their intervention program, based on their individual needs.

If you have questions about the READ Act, please reach out to our READ Act Coordinator  Erin Wollard.

MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) at MPA

At Montessori Peaks, our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is seamlessly integrated into Dr. Montessori's curriculum and philosophy, focusing on meeting each student where they are. Interventions, accommodations, and individualized education are core elements of our approach.

When students continue to face challenges in the classroom after receiving targeted interventions from their teacher and our intervention team, their teacher may bring their concerns to MPA’s Student Support Team (SST). The SST includes dedicated teachers, interventionists, and, when needed, special education team members. The team's primary goal is to assist classroom teachers in helping students reach their full potential, transitioning from struggling to succeeding.

While most students successfully graduate from MTSS, some may be referred to the special education team for further evaluation or may qualify for a Section 504 Plan to better address their needs.
